“Blue” by Ed Sheeran was released as the second single from his fifth studio album “Autumn Variations” on September 29, 2023 as its second single. This emotional ballad chronicling feelings of loss and loneliness was written for Jamal Edwards who passed away in February 2022; It features guitar, piano and choir in its chorus; its lyrics convey sadness over this loss as well as the desire to reconnect again in future lives.
Mia Barnes directed and released “Blue”, Ed Sheeran's music video debuting October 6, 2023. In it he walks around different places such as bars, diners and parks while being pursued by an overly-large blue monster that represents Ed's grief; later that same evening the video ends up with Ed sitting quietly looking into the sky while singing his signature line: “It's only blue”.
“Blue” garnered rave reviews from critics and fans, both criticizing and appreciating Ed Sheeran's emotive vocals and lyrics as well as production elements and video. The song debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart; becoming his eleventh number-one in that country; it then reached the top ten positions across Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and US markets before finally garnering two Grammy Award nominations: Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance respectively.
