Ed Sheeran released his Autumn Variations album on September 29, 2023. Inspired by Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, each song on this record speaks about someone or some situation from Sheeran's life or those around him – each is dedicated to someone or some event in Sheeran's own or his friend's lives.
That's On Me is about dealing with the changes and struggles associated with growing older, such as depression, loneliness, addiction and regret. Sheeran sings of his struggle with creativity, self-esteem and relationships as well as how he blames himself for mistakes made during this stage of his life.
Sheeran expresses hope for a brighter future and peace and happiness in the form of this melancholic acoustic ballad with minimal instrumentation; Sheeran's vocals and lyrics take centre stage here and have received critical acclaim as have its emotional honesty from critics and fans.
