Nineteen years ago, Ja Rule paid homage to Tupac Shakur with “So Much Pain,” an emotional highlight off “Pain Is Love.”
Nineteen years ago, Ja Rule was on top of the rap game, more or less. While history has not been generous to his legacy, a case could easily have been made in fact that the lyricist of Murder Inc was one of the reigning rulers of hip-hop.
Singles such as J-Lo backed “I'm Real,” “Livin ‘It Up,” and “Always On Time” highlighted his pop sensibilities, which seemed to translate into his dominant style, admittedly. Yet Ja also gave some gems to the hip-hop heads on his third studio album, Pain Is Love, including the heartfelt tribute to Tupac Shakur “So Much Pain”.
Lyrics Snippet
I spits razors, never been a stranger to homicide
My city's full of tote-slangers and chalk lines
Why do we die at an early age?
Ni**a so young, but still a victim of a twelve-gauge
