Memphis Jelks spoke up in support of controversial figure and Cosby published a statement in defence of making an appearance in the video.
Before he was released from prison, Bill Cosby had been extremely busy. Many in the business opposed Cosby while he was convicted of sexual assault, but then it was discovered that his sentence was overturned due to a technicality, meaning he was once again a free man.
Many women have come forward, including some who claim to have been sexually assaulted by him at least 35 years ago. Reports earlier this week suggested that the 84-year-old actor planned on pursuing new speaking engagements or touring as a stand-up comedian, and this week, it was revealed that Cosby is in the process of recording a rap song.
In the single “The Cosby Dance” by Memphis Jelks, the rapper samples the theme song from The Cosby Show and on the track, Jelks gives plaudits to the comedian. Reports claim that Cosby is expected to appear in the music video for Jelks' latest dance track, and the public's response will either transform it into a wave or send it crashing down.
“The greatest legacy one can pass down to their children and grandchildren is not money or material goods, but a legacy of truth and facts. They removed The Cosby Show, A Different World, and many of my Honorary Degrees,” reads a statement to Radar Online. “Now, comes a prolific rapper, Memphis Jelks, who adds to the restoration of my legacy with a powerful new song called ‘The Cosby Dance' Hey, Hey, Hey — Far From Finished.”
Memphis Jelks continued to laud Cosby when he spoke with the outlet. “I believe the upcoming generation can learn a lot about overcoming adversities by studying and applying the principles of Dr. Cosby's educational and career choices that have helped lead to his enormous success,” he said. “What better way than a viral song and dance in which the lyrics celebrate some of the great attributes of one of the greatest American comedians of all time, who happens to be Black.”
For those who remember how often Cosby would openly speak about rap music and its influences, his participation in a rap music video has drawn criticism. Visit Memphis Jelks's page to listen to “The Cosby Dance.”
