Today marks the 28th birthday of the classic debut album by Redman, which featured the hit single “Time 4 Sum Aksion.”
Redman doesn't quite get the recognition he possibly deserves, all things considered. True, the lyricist from Brick City is praised by his colleagues, but the name is left out of the GOAT conversation at an unprecedented rate in the grand scheme of things. But it's hard to ignore, looking back, the consistency of his discography, which started with Whut? Thee Album twenty-eight years ago to this day. The twenty-one track album produced almost entirely by Redman and Erick Sermon, placed Reggie firmly on the map, thanks largely in part to breakout singles such as “Time 4 Sum Aksion.”
Although the dusty and sample-heavy old-school sound which instantly be balked at by some young fans, the early nineties remain an essential moment in hip-hop culture, where countless emcees started to make their mark. Redman's ludicrous character and sneering yet dexterous verbal delivery were distinctive off the bat. Redman takes to the drum-driven beat with a vengeance on Time 4 Sum Aksion, setting out a ridiculous flow as he weaves braggadocious punchlines together.
“The Funkadelic devil, hit you with the rap level of 10,” he spits. “Then 1, 2, 3, you're pinned / I get action, so everybody jump wit your rump / If you like the way it sounds punk, pump it in your back trunk.”
Lyrics Snippet
The Funkadelic Devil, hit you with the rap level of 10
Then 1, 2, 3, you're pinned
I get action, so everybody jump wit your rump
If you like the way it sounds punk
Pump it in your back trunk
